OPEN LEARNING CENTRE - SERVICE GUIDE
The Open Learning Centre is your first stop to gather the resources you need to tackle your assignments and coursework and to ensure successful outcomes of your programme of study. An introduction to the Open Learning Centre (OLC)services should be offered as part of your College Induction program but remember that the most valuable resource of all is the OLC Staff corps, always available to offer help and support.
INFORMATION RESOURCES
...come in a variety of formats and the OLC offers access to the following:
ON-LINE/OFFLINE LIBRARY
To ensure that books are kept in circulation for the benefit of all users, no books or learning material are allowed to leave the Resource Centre. Books 24/7 will be available on-line.
MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS
Daily, Weekly and Quarterly Newspapers, Magazines, Journals etc. are available. Copies are stored in our comprehensive archives (see Magazine Holdings List for details)
PRINTED REFERENCE SOURCES
Need an address, or a definition, or some statistics? For quick enquiries check the reference collections, which include Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Atlases and other sources of essential current information.
MEDIA ROOM
The following resources are available:
A big screen TV, a DVD/Video/CD Player, a variety of educational DVD's, Video's, CD's etc. Seating arrangements for 20-30 people are available.
DOCUMENTATION SUPPORT
(PHOTOCOPYING, FAX, PRINTING? LAMINATING, BINDING)
Photocopiers, Fax Machines, Laminators, Binding Machines and Printers are available in each OLC. Copyright restrictions apply to copies made from most printed resources. A user is advised to ask the Member of Staff for guidance should require multiple copies or lengthy extracts. Note that a small charge will be made for this service and some restrictions may apply.
ON-LINE SERVICES
PCÕs based in each OLC offer you access to fast on-line information, both from the CollegeÕs own Intranet and the World Wide Web (Internet & E-mail).
Our Online Catalogue can guide user to the available resources and then, when the user is ready to prepare those assignments, he/she will find each PC loaded with the MS Office Software needed to prepare a polished presentation.
A variety of E-Learning Programmes are available e.g. On HIV/AIDS, ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence), Generic Business Administration etc.
Other Software packages include PLATO & PACE Career. Ask the facilitator for more detail. 20-25 PCÕs are available in each OLC.
INFORMATION SERVICES
A variety of pamphlets, brochures, etc. will be available. This service will inform you of all activities and services that are on offer at the South Cape College. Each OLC will have information of all our Campuses in the Southern Cape. Referrals to the relevant Department/ advisor will be done through this service.
